2019 Bordeaux The Price is Right!

Our offering of Bordeaux Futures from the excellent 2019 harvest got off to a great start with Pontet Canet - one of the true stars of the vintage.  With the current situation, we are very pleased to see Pontet Canet open at a very attractive price!  Last week and this week many Chateau have followed their lead and we are seeing prices at their lowest points in many years.

The annual tasting of the new vintage held each Spring in Bordeaux was cancelled this year, but a few of our suppliers have sent samples and we’ve tasted through quite a few wines. Loads of freshness and very subtle tannins… lots of class and pedigree-they remind me a bit of the 2016’s. Please feel free to email me at if you’d like some feedback. I’ll make a special mention for Lafon Rochet.  I absolutely loved the "throwback" style of this wine and it’s a ridiculous bargain at $39!  We tasted through over 30 wines this past Saturday and there really wasn’t a dog in the bunch.  The overall quality of 2019 seems to be very consistent-both on the left and right bank as well as Pessac. Some of our favorites are yet to be released (save some money for both Pichons as well as Haut Bailly and SHL!) But please keep checking this page as wines are being released every day.

Besides the obvious high scoring wines from the below list we were also very impressed by:

  • Lafon Rochet (with Branaire the best buy of the vintage thus far)
  • Giscours (classic, textbook Margaux)
  • Pape Clement (this might be my favorite PC of all time-wait and see…)
  • Leoville Poyferre (beautiful pure fruit in this wine-very supple but has tons of underlying structure and power)
  • Beychevelle (the most exotic Beychevelle I’ve ever tried-will be fascinating to follow)
  • Brane Cantenac This is truly a wine that deserves more love.  In our lineup of over 30 wines the whole wine staff was highly impressed with this Margaux gem. A true standout and a bargain at this price
  • La Lagune I though the price was a typo when I saw it!  For $35 you can’t beat the price/quality ratio here from this famous Chateau
  • Smith Haut Lafitte Fantastic in 2019. I think this may end up being even better than their off the charts 2015 and 2016…
  • Berliquet  Owned and managed by the same team who brings you Rauzan Segla and Canon (Chanel), this by far the best wine to ever come from this Estate. Kind of drinks like a “baby Canon”. Really impressive

As you may know there is currently a 25% tariff in effect for all French wines below 14.1 ABV. Our prices below do not include this tariff.  We hope (and pray) that it will be gone by the time this wine arrives in the USA. If not our plan is to keep the wine in France with the hope that the tariff ends (up to a year).  The worst case scenario is that we will ask customers to split the tariff cost with us. If this happens and you decide that you do not want to pay the extra 12.5% we will offer a full refund on your purchase. Please note that many 2019 Bordeaux will be above 14.1 ABV anyway, so this certainly will not apply to all the below wines (for example most right bank and St. Estephe wines in 2019 are above 14.1 ABV).
