Here's a dark and intense red wine from the deep south of Italy. The 2016 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarra is an inky black and impenetrable expression with very linear aromas of black fruit, tar and campfire ash. Those aromas are delivered with immediate and sharply contained pulses that hit the palate in steady succession. Despite all that massive aromatic potential, the mouthfeel is more compact and even a bit shorter on the finish than you might expect. This is a good thing, because any more richness would be too much. Some 20,000 bottles were made.
