From vines about 50 years old at 400 meters above sea level, the 2020 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg Eckberg shows a deep and intense, lemon-scented bouquet with notes of crushed stones (smoke), phenols, iodine and minerals. On the palate, this is an intense, rich and fine but tightly structured Sommerberg Riesling with lots of grip and self-confident tannins giving this powerful wine its frame or spine. The 2020 is textured, lush and salty and provided with firm mineral acidity and stimulating lemon bitters, but it needs a year or four to unfold its true finesse and start singing.
