A Few More Gems to Sip over the Summer

Whether on the Deck, or on the Beach... These Wines are sure to Delight!

As much as we love to sell wines that receive glorious accolades from some of our favorite critics, there are so many that seem to be overlooked and underappreciated (although we did sneak in one 94 pointer on here!).  I think there are some great choices below and I hope you will take the opportunity to try a few!  -Tim Adams

2021 Ciro Mabilia Rosato DOC Ippolito

A brilliant rosé color with hues of violet and a delicate and fruity aroma with clear notes of sour black cherries and roses. The taste is fresh, delicate, and very persistent. Made from Gaglioppo, the most ancient native grape of Calabria, Mabilia is a tribute to the Norman princess who lived in the Cirò area in the 11th century.

2020 Gavi Commune di Gavi DOCG Fontanassa

Straw yellow with splendid greenish reflections, hints of freshly cut grass, grapefruit, white melon, pear, almond, with a trace of sage. Ample and complex with a long-lasting complexity. Marco Ghemme farms his 15 hectares using organic viticulture methods. The soil is rocky and poor, with clay and sand rich in iron. Their wine is alive. No chemical product is added. After the wine is left on its lees for a short time, only one filtration is carried out at the time of bottling. Perfect as an aperitif, with fish dishes, shellfish, white meats, pasta and rice.

2020 Age of Grace Viognier Lismore

The 2020 Viognier "The Age of Grace" has a subtle, well-defined bouquet of detailed lemon sherbet, lemon thyme and crushed pebble scents, poised and, yes, graceful. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and linear and quite steely toward the almost Chenin-like finish. This is not flamboyant, Rhone-like Viognier - it's is far more tensile and racy. It should age extremely well in bottle.

2020 Ciro 906 Fiano di Avellino DOCG Ciro Picariello

Picariello's Fiano di Avellino is a wonderful, textured, phenolic white wine that is bursting with an underlying minerality imparted by the volcanic soils of the region. Adding to the full body are hints of herbs, citrus, almond, and an enticing smokey/struck flint character from volcanic soil. The wine finishes fresh with a touch of bright, green apple acidity combined with an earthy minerality. Pair with seafood, especially shellfish, or just roast chicken. Drinks well on release, but can also age beautifully, 10-15 years. The flagship white is the Ciro 906 bottling of Fiano made from a single parcel (#906 on the official Avellino map) at 650 meters in elevation. This parcel has their oldest vines, the first planted by Ciro back in 1990. This wine is not produced every year, only in colder vintages with more acidity. It stays 12 months on the lees in steel followed by 18 months in the bottle before release.

2019 Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalesse IGT Diecidecilitri Alice Bonaccorsi

A brilliant gem with ruby red reflections, this wine shows alluring fruit aromas of cherry and raspberry mixed with some herbal and lavender notes. Understated on the palate the wine has soft tannins, ample fresh fruit and finishes with hints of pepper and light volcanic minerality. It leaves a delightful yet quaffable allure that makes it hard not to come right back for more. It will pair fabulously with simple fare like bread, cheese, and fruit to grilled and roast meats or even seafood. Great to have around for impromptu consumption. Yes, a lighter red... but a crowd pleaser for sure.
