Best Buys:

Our five Best Buys from the exceptional 2019 Burgundy vintage.

These wines are sure to sell quickly – they are proof that not all good Burgundies are expensive! They are drinking beautifully now but will age effortlessly for a few more years.

2019 Burgundy – an Exceptional but Small Vintage

James Suckling senior editor Stuart Pigott reports the 2019 Burgundy Vintage "hit the bullseye" and the vintage has a "rare combination of excellence and great consistency." He found in the wines—that remind him of those from great vintages like 1985 and 2009—ripe yet precise fruit, elegant tannins, and lively acidity that all came together on the palate. These wines can age but the majority are ready to drink now.

Wine Advocate's Burgundy expert William Kelley says that in the Cotes d'Or, Burgundy's most prestigious region, 2019 was a "thrilling year for Pinot Noir, delivering wines bursting with head-turning perfume and fresh, succulent fruit." He says the wines are "simultaneously serious and immensely charming," concluding that "2019 is a superb vintage, and these are wines that all Burgundy lovers are going to want to secure for their cellars."

The accolades keep coming. Decanter declares 2019 is a "hedonistic vintage that will take its place alongside other exceptional recent years in Burgundy." "The 2019 Pinot Noirs are stunning," says Wine Spectator.

2019 Vincent Girardin - Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee St. Vincent

Vincent Girardin has made a freshly juicy wine with crisp acidity and bright red fruits. Freshness makes a good contrast with the core of tannins. Drink this attractive wine from 2022. A 'best buy' from the excellent 2019 vintage in Burgudy.

2019 Meix Foulot - Mercurey Veleys

This is an exceptional value for a rare and highly regarded Burgundy. The renown 1er Cru vineyard 'Les Veleys' is situated on a steeply sloping, southeast facing vineyard with extremely low yields due to the old vines - the oldest section planted in 1947. In its entirety, 'Les Veleys' encompasses 1.5 hectares with annual production of approximately 450 cases. "The 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Veleys offers up notes of cassis, plums, smoked meats and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety, with powdery tannins, it's richly structured but charming."

2019 Mongeard-Mugneret - Bourgogne Rouge

The Mongeard family have been making wine in Vosne-Romanée for over 300 years ! They are unquestionably one of the greatest estates in Burgundy. This beautiful Bourgogne rouge is guaranteed to please the most sophisticated palate.

"Bursting with aromas of berries, cherries, orange rind and petals, Mongeard-Mugneret's 2019 Bourgogne Pinot Noir is medium-bodied, supple and lively, with melting tannins and tangy acids."

2019 Domaine Brintet - Mercurey Levriere

This is another incredible value in a very rare Burgundy. The tiny 1er cru vineyard of Les Levriere is solely owned by Domain Brintet and produces only around 250 cases of wine per year. This is a beautifully complex and refined wine.

The domain is one of the oldest estates in all of Burgundy. The Brintet history in Mercurey begins with the arrival of Jehan Brietat from Italy in 1340 ! In the late 1500s the family became owners of some vines in Mercurey. Flash forward several centuries and we find Luc Brintet and his wife Veronique heading the 11.5-hectare domaine since 1984. It is they who have ushered the domaine into the upper echelon of Mercurey producers—they have gradually expanded holdings while at the same time increasing quality in an effort to showcase the incredible values this appellation can provide.

2019 Joblot - Givry Clos Servoisine

Discreet but not imperceptible wood frames a ripe combination of red and dark currant, raspberry and plenty of earth and spice nuances. Here too there is a suave texture to the medium weight flavors that possess more evident refinement on the velvety, sappy and lingering finale. Lovely.
