MEET & GREET Tasting:

Jeff Cohn of Jeff Cohn Cellars

Saturday, December 10th 1-4pm

The Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine named Jeff Cohn Cellars their 2020 Winery of the Year!

"Jeff goes to great lengths to marry California fruit to the aspects of terroir and minerality you'd find in France's oldest winemaking regions. He does so by travelling all over California, from Santa Barbara to Mendocino, in search of the finest fruit and the best vineyards. Among some of Jeff's most important discoveries include the Rockpile region in Sonoma, where he began sourcing the Syrah grapes that are now the main component of his most elegant and complex wines; the Buffalo Hill Syrah, Haley's Reserve Syrah, and the stunning 2008 So Serine Syrah, to name a few. The craggy soil of the aptly named Rockpile produces some of the most complex and distinctive minerality in all of California."

2018 The First Date

60% Grenache Blanc 40% Roussane

I use a concrete egg-shaped tank to ferment and age the Grenache Blanc portion of this blend. The premise is that with the egg's shape and the earth's gravitation rotation it creates a vortex inside the egg that stirs the lees on a constant basis as it ages. What I love about the egg is that it keeps the fruit bright, adds a creaminess to the wine, and it brings out the minerality of the fruit.

A beautiful light golden color, blend has an explosive nose of peach and dried apricot, lemon/lime zest, mineral and white flowers. It's a rich, opulently full-bodied wine that showcases dried apricots and peaches, Margarita mix, toasted brioche and fresh vanilla bean. What makes this wine, so intriguing is the mineral back bone that keeps the wine fresh. -Winemakers Notes

" The First Date is beautifully done, offering pure, precise notes of orange blossom, pineapple, honeysuckle, and white flowers. Rich and textured, yet elegant and finesse driven as well as perfectly balanced, it shows the long, even 2018 growing season perfectly. It's great today and I suspect will evolve nicely for 4-6 years."

2016 Stagecoach Marsanne

2016 85% Marsanne 15% Sustainably Farmed

The perfect Rhône white for holiday meals! Even more gorgeous now. Aged for 18 months in French oak, this wine is a voluptuous not only in its aromatics but in flavors. The aromas are complex, whirling blend of lightly toasted almonds, orange marmalade, wet stones, honeysuckle and pineapple. The palate is very intense, succulent from the rich front palate to a finish that just goes on and on. And so, it has been my goal for as long as I can remember, to one day make something that I felt best showed Marsanne and Roussanne. In 2016, all the stars aligned for me and we brought back Marsanne from the incredibly rocky soils of Stagecoach Vineyard. The last time we made this wine was in 2012, and trust me, this is a white that will age beautifully for 20 years for sure. To make 2016 vintage even better, I was able to bring in Roussanne also from the Stagecoach Vineyard. All that was left for me to do was believe that I could make magic happen. -Winemakers Notes

" Classic Marsanne buttered stone fruits, crushed stone, toast, and hints of hazelnuts all emerge from Cohn's 2016 Marsanne Stagecoach Vineyard, a rich, full-bodied, beautifully textured, and concentrated white that's going to knock it out of the park on the dinner table. It brings serious fruit yet stays nicely balanced, has notable purity, and is just a stunning example of Marsanne from California."

2018 Pure Yum

67% Syrah 33% Grenache

Deep scarlet red with shades of purple. Aromas of black cherry, hot cinnamon stick, slightly gamy with dried Herbs de Provence, dark chocolate nibs and rose petal. A voluptuous mouthfeel that is oozing with red and blue fruits and layered in silky mix of savory and sweet fruit plus minerality that carries the wine to a long finish. This wine is as sensual as they come and yes, it is Pure Yum! -Winemakers Notes

" The 2018 Pure Yum is a blend of 67% Syrah and 33% Grenache from the Rockpile and El Diablo vineyards. It was made with 30% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 100% neutral French oak. Medium ruby, it has seductive aromas of red and black cherries, tobacco leaves, red flowers and graphite. 2017 Domaine des Chirats Rockpile Vineyard

100% Syrah Sustainably Farmed

Each year, I feel Yves and I get closer to achieving the vision we have had for this project. This year is really showing finesse with a palate of elegance, depth, purity and sheer intensity. I have always felt that this vineyard brings a very Hermitage aspect to the table, but this year I think there is a touch of Côte Rôtie showing through. A sensational deep red/purple color is followed by what I feel is one of the most fragrant noses for this wine that we have made. From the savory to the black/blue and red fruits to the cassis and mineral notes that intermingles throughout. Full bodied, rich and concentrated, but manages to stay light on its feet. -Winemakers Notes

" Coming from a collaboration between Jeff Cohn and Yves Cuilleron, the 2017 Syrah Domaine Des Chirats is wound up and tight yet has wonderful purity in its blackberry fruits as well as notes of ground pepper, candied violets, bouquet garni, bay leaf, and gamey notes. Possessing a killer mix of ripe, sexy fruit and classic, Old World Syrah wildness, it's full-bodied and flawlessly balance, with ample tannins and a great finish."

2017 Sweetwater Springs Petite Sirah

100% Petite Sirah Sustainably Farmed

The color of this wine reminds me of the saying: It's always darkest just before the dawn. I can tell you the moment before the dawn can't even come close to how opaque this wine is. Aromatically this wine covers the gamut from blackberry pie filling, lavender, wild herbs and even a hint of stone fruit one could spend at least 10 minutes just looking at the color and partaking of the aromatics. This wine is the Full Monty from the first sip to the end of the glass. Blackberry, black currant, salted black licorice, and air-dried beef. This wine is screaming for a cool winter's night and a crackling fire. -Winemakers Notes

" One of the riper, sexier, and more seamless wines in the lineup, the 2017 Petite Sirah Sweetwater Springs Vineyard has a dense core of blue and black fruit as well as plenty of scorched earth, graphite, and violet aromatics. With medium to full body, rock-solid balance, and the more focused, straight style of the vintage, drink it over the coming decade."

2018 Zinfandel Rossi Ranch

100% Zinfandel Heritage, Organic Sonoma Vineyard

This vintage of Rossi zinfandel is a mystery novel, with twists and turns from the beginning aromatics to the last taste in the finish. The aromatics to this wine start with a savory aspect, that flow gently into the black cherry and raspberry coulis with just a hint of freshly cracked black peppercorns and tarragon. The palate begins with a medium to full-bodied feel and builds by the midpalate, into a not just a very complex experience, but one that makes you ponders what's going to happen next. Black and blue fruits with savory notes intermingle with a black licorice and a glycerol concentration, with just enough back bone to give it verve. The finish to this wine is one of my favorite aspects of tasting this wine. I find that's its mineral and soft tannin structure keeps the suspense going. Originally planted by legendary vintner, Carlo Rossi in 1910, Rossi Ranch is steeped in Sonoma Valley history. My friend Phil resurrects it's old vines in 2012 and together we make magic! -Winemakers Notes

" From a great vineyard in Sonoma and all varietal, the 2018 Zinfandel Rossi Ranch Vineyard reveals a dense ruby/plum hue to go with a rich, meaty bouquet of red and black plums, sandalwood, cigar wrapper, peppery herbs, and iron. Rich and beautifully textured, with building structure, this medium to full-bodied Zinfandel is going to drink brilliantly for a solid decade, if not longer."

2018 Maggie's Vineyard Zinfandel

100% Zinfandel Heritage, Sonoma Valley Vineyard

One of my favorite vineyards from my Rosenblum days. Aromatically this wine is wild raspberries, cinnamon stick and clove, crème brûlée and a touch of black licorice and freshly cracked black peppercorn. Then, on the palate this incredibly lush wine, just explodes! Black cherry compote. Roasted Herbes de Provence, black raspberries, tarragon just a touch of Valrhona Dulcey milk chocolate. In a blind tasting, I would say this could be Zinfandel that was grown in the Southern Rhône. This once-in-a-lifetime wine is dedicated to my friend, Kent. 20% whole cluster fermentation, foot stomped for 3 days during cold soak, aged for 18 months in 20% new French oak. -Winemakers Notes

"The 2018 Zinfandel Maggie's Vineyard was made with 20% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 20% new French oak. Pale ruby, it features bright raspberry fruit laced with hints of peach, citrus peel and dried flowers, gaining more aromatic nuance as it spends time in the glass. The palate is silky, fresh, layered, and so, so perfumed. It's an incredibly elegant style this year!"
