Uncommon Agrarian Wine with Aaron Keller

Saturday, April 6th, 1-4pm

Please join us on Saturday. Aaron Keller of Williams Corner will be here to pour some authentic wines of character from one of our favorite suppliers. Here's a bit about Williams Corner and what they do from their website:

Williams Corner is an importer and distributor of wine and other fermented & distilled beverages based in Charlottesville, Virginia. We specialize in wines made by dedicated and passionate craftspeople working in an environmentally conscious manner.

We acknowledge that grape growing has been one of the most chemically intensive agricultural sectors since the widespread adoption of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides in the second half of the 20th Century. We choose to work with growers and winemakers who recognize the unsustainability of intensive industrial monoculture and who, as a result, have decided to take a different approach to farming.

These approaches are as varied as the number of winemakers in the Williams Corner portfolio. What these artisans tend to have in common is a commitment to land preservation and renewal. This philosophy of agrarian stewardship usually informs the winemaking process as well. It tends not to be proscriptive or dogmatic, but rather sensible, intentional, and holistic.

The goal for many of these folks is to make exceptional wines of great character in a way that aligns with their views on the natural world. The results often provide insight into distinctive geographic locations, grape varieties, and/or specific processing techniques. They are also meant to provide pleasure, a feature of wine consumption we vigorously promote and defend here at Williams Corner.

Aaron Will pour:

2022 Kobal - Furmint Podravje Sipon

Kobal wines come from the Haloze appellation in Štajerska Slovenia. Since the Roman times, Haloze has been considered one of the top wine-growing sites in Central Europe. The soil of these steep slopes consists predominantly of marl, and the roots of vines that average 35 years old go deep into the ground to absorb minerality. Owner and winemaker, Bojan Kobal, is the true scientist of his craft. The amazing variety of styles of wines he produces shows that there is nothing he cannot do. The lineup of fresh Kobal whites is Bojan's expression of Haloze fruit and varietal character. The Bajta wines are all fermented with natural yeasts only. From juicy and playful Pet Nats to the mature skin contact Belo – there is a delicious wine here for any occasion

2022 Chateau Cambon – Beaujolais

Chateau Cambon was founded by two giants of the Beaujolais natural wine world, Marcel Lapierre and Jean-Claude Chanudet. Marcel's wife Marie took over for her late husband after his passing in 2010.

Jean-Claude Chanudet also makes the wines at Domaine Chamonard–he's married to Genevieve Chamonard, and together they took charge of her family estate after her father Joseph passed away in 1990.

"We make wines with no additives, 'natural style,' as much as I detest this word which doesn't mean very much… Our goal is to make wines of terroir, bringing pleasure to our customers and making them want to drink more!"
– Marie Lapierre

2021 Filipa Pato - Bairrada Baga Post-Quercus

2015 Barale, Fratelli - Barolo Bussia

"Opening to rich dark fruit and thick concentration, the 2015 Barolo Bussia Sergio Barale is a wine of medium to full weight with good textural richness. There are some notes of soft, red fruit scattered among thick waves of dark fruit intensity. This wine sits firmly on the palate. The grapes are fermented with ambient yeasts and left on the skins for up to 30 days. The wine then ages in 30-hectoliter botti for three years. Some 3,600 bottles were produced."
94 Points Monica Larner Wine Advocate
