Free In-Store Tasting:

Italian Wines from Indigenous Selections

Saturday, April 13th, 1-4pm

Join us to taste a selection of fine Italian wines from Indigenous Selections: featuring wines from Cottanera of Mount Etna, Sicily and Ciacci Piccolomini of Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany.

We are excited to have Antonio Gomez-Orodea from Indigenous Selections in the store to present a few of our favorite wines. First we will present Cottanera's elegant Etna Rosato, a versatile perfect spring wine to pair with light fare, followed by the single-contrada rosso, also elegant but with greater weight and complexity, great with grilled fare. Additionally we have the more hearty Tuscan sangiovese-based wines from one of our favorite producers, Montalcino's Ciacci Piccolomini. It will be a rare treat to have the Cru Pianrosso open to taste. Hope to see you in the store.

2022 Etna Rosato Cottanera

The Cottanera 2022 Etna Rosato is beautiful in the glass, with pink, gold and copper highlights. The wine's color is achieved with just three or four hours of skin contact and finishes in steel. Fruit for this wine comes from a vineyard site that is specifically farmed to make rosé. The bouquet leans toward floral aromas at the front and fruity aromas at the back. It shows balance and precision with a mineral-driven finish. Proprietor Francesco Cambria tells me that 2022 was a hot and dry year and that 2021 was more balanced overall. This is one of my favorite Italian rosés, especially at this price point."

2020 Etna Rosso Contrada Diciassettesalme Cottanera

"After a bit of air you are greeted with notes of crushed herbs, spiced plums and dried roses. Medium-bodied with underlying mineral character. Juicy and flavorful on the palate. Best after 2024."

2021 Rosso di Montalcino Ciacci Piccolomini

"Opening slowly in the glass, the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with savory herbal tones, wild strawberry and cedary spice. This is soothingly soft and round on the palate with a pleasant inner sweetness and crisp red and black fruits that cascade throughout. Brisk acidity and sour citrus hints add harmony throughout the long and spicy finale, as the 2021 leaves nuanced tannins framing the experience perfectly. This lovely Rosso from Ciacci Piccolomini will win many hearts."

2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso Ciacci Piccolomini

"The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso shows nice balance and elegance, and it definitely shows the deft hand of the winemaking team in what was not an easy vintage by any stretch. This pretty wine delivers lots of fresh cherry and wild rose, with ferrous earthy, licorice and grilled herb; I also get bay leaf and rosemary sprig. Like the annata 2017 Brunello produced by this estate, the single-vineyard Brunello Pianrosso is distinguished by a sweet cherry note (plus a hefty 15% alcohol) that accompanies the wine from start to finish. Production is 37,000 bottles."

2019 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso Ciacci Piccolomini

"The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens to a wide and all-encompassing bouquet with dried cherry or cherry pie with the crust, plum tart and rose potpourri. There are evident oak tones, but they fold into underbrush, grilled herb and the generous texture of this wine. Likewise, the 15% alcohol content also neatly disappears into the wine's fleshy fruit consistency. For sure, this is a wine that needs more bottle evolution in order to hone in on the silkiness and pretty freshness of such an important Sangiovese. Exactly 43,054 bottles were made along with about 1,000 larger formats."
