Please join us Saturday for a fantastic lineup of authentic wines. Started by Mac Bev alumnus Roy Cloud, Vintage 59 is one of the finest import portfolios in the USA. If you see their sticker on the back label, you can be 100% certain you are getting a wine of character and balance that has been truly hand selected by Roy and his team (I know this as fact as I've run into Roy in Burgundy, Loire and Rhone!). Please stop by – you do not want to miss this!
Roy hired Doug Mohr, as true DC wine legend (remember him from the glory days of Vidalia?) to represent his portfolio We are very excited to have Doug here to pour the following:
2022 Domaine de l'Aumonier - Touraine Sauvignon Blanc
This comes from vines averaging 20 years old growing in the communes of Couffy, Seigy and Chateauvieux just south of the Cher River, a major tributary of the Loire. The Loire Valley is an open window to the Atlantic, blessing the region with clement weather. L'Aumonier's soils range from tufa hillsides rich in clay and limestone to flatter sites of flint and clay, sand and clay, and silt and clay. Ferments are typically spontaneous (the occasional difficult tank may get a dose of neutral yeast) and the wine is raised in tank. There's no fining during élevage and only a light filtration at bottling.

2022 Coupe Roses Minervois Blanc Arges
Pronounced Ar-jess, this comes from the lieu-dit of Babio to the northeast of the village (Karst comes from the north-northwest). The name is an homage to the ancient Greeks, who may have been the first to make wine in Gaul; it's their word for clay. The soil here is clay-limestone, but the emphasis is on the clay, and it's the coupe-roses clay once used by Françoise's forefathers to make roof tiles. This heavy topsoil lays 1-2 meters over limestone bedrock, nurturing just over three acres of Roussanne and just over one of Grenache Blanc. Harvest is by hand, the grapes pass over a selection table, fermentation is spontaneous (20% in neutral 500L demi-muids, the rest in steel), blending takes place in early December, and bottling is in the following spring. No fining or filtration, no SO2 or other additions.

2020 Jean-Luc Mouillard Cotes du Jura Chardonnay Floral
Another ouillé wine, i.e., one that isn't purposely exposed to air for an extended time during élevage, Floral is composed of Chardonnay with around 10% Savagnin. The exact percentages fluctuate according to the harvest, but the aim is always to have a fresh, vibrant wine. This is made entirely in tank and production averages 700 cases.

2022 Pavillon de Chavannes - Cote de Brouilly Cuvee Ambassades
This is a very old school Beaujolais in the best sense: beautiful garnet color, beguiling aromatics, and a burst of refreshment in the mouth—and that burst is a savory, mineral, toothsome thing because of the domaine's high elevations and because of Brouilly's meager volcanic soils. Some crus emphasize soil notes, others give fruit, but only good Côte de Brouilly gives stone in the flavor

2020 Domaine Jean-Luc Mouillard Cotes du Jura Trousseau Sur la Cour
One parcel of nearly 3 acres in their commune of Mantry. Trousseau is a Jura native and at some point in its history migrated to Portugal, where it is known as Bastardo. The Mouillard rendition is a lightly-colored wine of notably full, limestony flavors. Lighter years see this wine aged entirely in tank while riper years can see barrel ageing.

2021 Coupe Roses Minervois Vignals
Granaxa is Occitane dialect for Grenache, and this is Coupe Rose's Grenache cuvée, raised in second and third-year oak barrels. Now we get into more weight and body, with distinctly earthy overtones in the red fruit. Their Grenache grows in their stoniest soils. Yearly production averages 1,000 cases
