Morisoli Vineyard

A rare opportunity to taste wine from one of the most iconic vineyards in Napa... Chris will be showing the 2020 vintage along with the yet to be released new Zinfandel from this historic estate.

The Morisoli Vineyard is situated along Niebaum Lane in Rutherford, California, just west of Highway 29 in the center of the historic Rutherford Bench. The contiguous, 53-acre vineyard sits at the base of Mt. St. John, planted in alluvial soils, which have been slowly eroded from the Mayacamas mountain range. This small patch of land became home to the first-generation of Morisolis in 1902 when they settled there to begin farming grapes and start a family. These well-drained, gravelly bale-clay and pleasanton-loam soils have consistently yielded wines of great complexity, firm tannins, and abundant fruit flavors.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Morisoli Vineyard in the Rutherford AVA. The vines are all bilateral, cordon trained and were planted in 1992 on Clone 7/8 using 110R & 1103P rootstocks. The vineyard is still farmed by the Morisoli Family as it has been since 1902. Gary, Melody and son Chris Morisoli still use original tractors and vintage implements to farm the old way. A French plow is used to kill weeds around the vines instead of using sprays, and the vineyard is disced regularly to maintain moisture in the soil. Irrigation is used sparingly during the summer to maintain vine health during heat spells. Harvest is completed in the early morning by hand using the same crew, year to year. A cover crop of plow-down legumes (Sweet Peas, Vetch and Fava Beans) is planted to return nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil every year after harvest and sub soil ripping.

"The grape must received 3 days of cold soaking before warming and being inoculated with yeast. During fermentation the tank was pumped over 3 times daily and reached a maximum temperature of 85F which achieved a bright ruby color in the young wine. After 20 days of maceration, the wine was drained off and the skins were pressed. Twenty-six months of barrel aging in 60% new Seguin Moreau and Maury French oak barrels produced a beautifully balanced wine that is approachable now and will age for many years to come. This elegant cabernet displays bright red cherry, sage and black currant with integrated oak and a touch of classic savory Rutherford Dust."

One of the more beautiful, fresh, and energetic 2020s of the vintage. Lifted red-toned fruits intermix with dusty minerals leading to a medium-bodied Cabernet rife with a lovely saline mineral edge and bright boysenberry fruits alongside red currants.
