In 1872, Baron Bettino Ricasoli wrote the original “recipe” for Chianti, and today Francesco Ricasoli carries on the tradition. Castello di Brolio is the estate’s flagship. It’s 100% Sangiovese from estate vineyards surrounding the castle, grown on a mix of sandstone, galestro and alberese limestone. The grapes are picked by hand and the wine ages 22 months in 500-liter French tonneaux, partly new, in the castle cellars. Expect red and black cherry, raspberry and strawberry, with smoke, graphite, pepper, cedar and a touch of vanilla. The palate is full and juicy, with velvety tannins, lively acidity and a long, mineral finish.
