His first wines came from a 1947 Garnacha and Mourvèdre vineyard in Barrancas. When he lost access to that site, he’d already saved cuttings. He replanted them high in Los Chacayes, in the Uco Valley, on stony alluvial soils. That massal selection is Gloria. The grapes are hand-picked and foot-trodden, then fermented with wild yeasts, with about half the fruit left as whole clusters. The wine ages in clay amphorae and old French oak, then rests in bottle before release. Expect cherry, raspberry and dried flowers, with hints of hibiscus and fresh herbs. It’s lean, tense and juicy, with fine whole-cluster grip and a bright, lifted finish.
