Spanish Tesoros con Howard Friedman

Saturday, September 23, 1-4pm

Please join us this Saturday. Howard Friedman of South River Imports is back yet again to show some superb favorites from his portfolio. We keep asking Howard back for many reasons. The wines are great, his passion for all things Spain is second to none, and he every customer leaves the table with a smile on their face (and a bottle or 3 as well!). A long-time veteran of the wine business in DC, Howard worked on the wholesale side for many years, then moved to retail and now has started a very successful importing business focusing on the wines of Spain. He also runs wine-centric tours to Spain that have been a huge hit with many of our customers Please stop by Saturday, we promise you won't be disappointed. In addition, Howard does "white glove" tours to Spain and he has some openings for his next adventure

Howard will pour the following:

A couple of whites from Bierzo and Valdeorras. Casar de Burbia is amongst the best in this region and O Luar do Sil is a new winery owned by Capellanes.

Casar de Burbia – Godello

Casar de Burbia is a winery that focuses on quality in the excellent expression of its wines, proof of the constant efforts made to capture all of the essences provided by the privileged terroir of El Bierzo.
They are a family-run winery from the region El Bierzo (Spain), which has been making wines in the traditional way for more than two decades. Their wines are made with Mencía and Godello grapes from their own vineyards (27 Ha) located in the Camino de Santiago at an altitude of 900 meters over the sea level.
The vineyard is arranged into 42 plots, classified according to their altitude, orientation and soil characteristics. They are artisan and limited. Experienced in the winemaking process and knowledge of the Terroir.

Pago de los Capellanes - O'Luar do Sil Godello

Pago de los Capellanes started a 2nd winery in Valdeorras to specialize in white wines from the Godello grape. This wine is 100% Godello grown on granitic soils near the village of Codos de Larauco. All grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a cold maceration on the skins to retain optimal aromatics. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats after pressing and removal of the gross lees. When fermentation is complete the wine rests on its lees for 3 months with batonnage (lees stirring) to deliver richness, body and aromatic density.

PAGO DE LOS CAPELLANES
RIBERA DEL DUERO

In the Burgos region of Spain, lies the village of Pedrosa de Duero and it is here in the "Golden Triangle" at about 2600 feet that the 100 hectares of vineyards are planted on hillsides of clay and limestone. Exacting attention to what the land can yield is shown in the fact that only about 4400 kilos of grapes as opposed to the almost 6300 kilos allowed by the D.O. council are harvested. Low yields, modern wire trained and en vaso vines of Tinto Fino are meticulously cared for and hand-picked at harvest. Whole cluster, cold fermentation for between 22 and 35 days is used to assure maximum extraction, and during this process the developing must is pumped over daily. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in oak barrels or in tank depending on the wine. Five different types of barrels are used for the Joven/Roble. Twice Named "Winery of the Year" by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

2021 Pago de los Capellanes - Tempranillo Joven

Produced from wire-trained vines that are 15-20 years old. Made from 100% Tinto Fino, this wine develops over about 22 days of cold fermentation. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tank and the wine spends about 5 months in new French oak barrels when this is complete.

Pago de los Capellanes - Reserva

Dense tones of earth and dark saddle leather abound in this wine made from 100% Tinto Fino vines that are 25-30 years old. It underwent 6 days of chilled whole cluster pre-soak and then 30 days of initial fermentation. 28 days of malolactic fermentation and 18 months of aging in French oak an unfiltered bottling then followed. Another two years is spent in the bottle before being released.
