Time to stock up for Thanksgiving!

Addy Bassin's is your Riesling headquarters

It's no secret by now that Riesling is one of the best white wine choices for your Thanksgiving meal (or any other meal for that matter!). We are proud to have by far the best selection of Riesling in the area both dry and fruity. I decided to highlight a few that are on my "hot list" right now but please don't hesitate to stop by, call, or email if you want to expand on this list.

Why Riesling for Thanksgiving? Simple, it works well with everything! With all the various dishes at the Thanksgiving table you need a wine with good acidity and bright fruit. Dishes like cranberry sauce are very tough to pair for example. Also the turkey… I don't care how great a chef you are turkey is turkey and a little bit of sweetness in a Riesling enhances the flavor of the bird. -Phil Bernstein

Trocken (Dry) picks:

2021 Dr. Wagner - Saar Riesling QbA trocken

Dr. Wagner is one of the famed names of Germany's Saar region (now considered part of the Mosel of course). Saar wines are known for being crisp, racy and very ethereal. This wine has that going on and more! An exceptional value from the excellent 2021 vintage

2021 Vollenweider - Riesling Trocken Felsenfest

Daniel Vollenweider (who sadly passed away this year) fashions incredible Riesling from the Mosel. The wines have a "cult" following and we can never get as much as we'd like. My good friend Stephen Bitterolf of vom Boden fame (and the importer of this wine) sums up this wine very nicely:

The 2021er Felsenfest, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is a dry wine (with 6 g/l of residual sugar) made from late harvested fruit harvested in the Estate's Trabener Burgberg (2/3) and the Trarbacher Schlossberg (1/3). It offers a smoky nose of minty herbs, earthy spices, blackberry, greengage, licorice, and white minerals. The wine has quite some presence and intensity on the palate, where some earthy and broader elements make for a slightly large yet playful and fresh wine. The finish is very long and superbly intense. This is a great dry Riesling.

2020 Vollenweider - Wolfer Riesling Trocken

With an extra year of bottle age this is a "single vineyard" bottling from Vollenweider.

From Stephen: This is always one of my favorite wines – I opened a bottle the weekend after I heard about Daniel's death. I honestly can't say what it is specifically I love about it. It's a bit grander and more elegant, more crystalline than the Felsenfest… yet there is something still delicate and easy about it. It's so, so, so serious, but also clear and easy to drink. I love this wine.

And the Wine Advocate: Entirely from 40- to 50-year-old vines trained on single poles in a southwest-facing parcel and the Gelbe Weide plots in the Goldgrube, the 2020 Wolfer Riesling aged on the lees until the end of September. Tasted from the tank at the domain on the last day of October 2021, only two days after the 2021 harvest had finished, the wine was ready for filtration, which was scheduled for early November. The wine offers a coolish, spicy-pure and mineral bouquet with stony and herbal notes as well as rather white and lemony yet discreet fruit aromas. Pure, piquant and salty on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, tight, dry and tensioned but also lush and stimulating dry Riesling with fine grip and delicate bitters on the finish. It's so expressive and so super stimulating despite its dryness. Impressive.

Kabinett (slightly fruity) picks:

2021 Dr. Wagner - Ockfener Bockstein Kabinett

I'm always amazed how you can still get a wine from a grand cru vineyard like Bockstein for less than $25! Great Kabinett here -the 2019 version was our best-selling turkey wine a few years ago

Sale $22.99   |   SKU 92273

2020 Schafer Frohlich - Bockenauer Felseneck Kabinett

After a hiatus of a few years due to importer issues I'm thrilled that Schafer Frohlich is back! One of the greatest growers in Germany Tim Frohlich makes world-class wines from the Nahe region. Subtle and little spicy with loads of minerals. Just great wine….

So sleek, vibrant and juicy, this is a very sensual Riesling that happens to have some unfermented-grape sugar. Rippling with white peach, citrus and white flowers. So bright and invigorating that you've got to go back for more. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Spatlese (a bit more fruity than Kabinett)

2021 Karl Erbes - Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese

Karl Erbes has been a long-time favorite here at the shop. He owns wonderful parcels in the tenderloin of the middle Mosel. Nice to see a huge review for his excellent 20201

From 75- to 85-year-old vines and picked at 90° Oechsle, the 2021 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese was vinified in stainless steel and in fuder and fermented to 7.5% alcohol with 76 grams per liter of residual sugar. The wine offers a pure, very elegant and finely flinty, lemon-scented and tonic bouquet with remarkable elegance, substance and finesse. The striking acidity of 9.2 grams per liter is lifting all the analytical sweetness to the spheres of pure Riesling fruit and gives great elegance and finesse on the palate. This is a crystalline and saline Riesling with stimulating ripe and lush fruit and frisky mineral acidity that makes this a long-distance runner for those who are patient. The wine was aged on the full lees until April, when it was bottled. Screw cap. Tasted in July 2022.

2021 Haag, Willi - Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Spatlese

Willi Haag (the estate dates to 1500!) owns 6 hectares of grand cru vineyards in some of the greatest terroir that Germany has to offer. This is quite a nice Spatlese with all of that Mosel green apple and bright fruit. Flat out delicious. It will age quite nicely too

2020 Prum, JJ - Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spatlese

It wouldn't be a MacBev Riesling offer without something from JJ Prum. I always love their Zeltinger Sonnenuhr bottling. This is drinking great right now. 10/10 on the "yum factor"!

Prüm's 2020 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese shows a clear, bright, intense and elegant bouquet that is discreet but deep and concentrated in its fruit and provided with very delicate notes of finely weathered slate and very fine swirls of caramel. Intense and lush on the palate, this is a very fine, slightly creamy-textured Zeltinger Spätlese with fine and rather mild acidity and a quiet and elegant finish. There is nothing spectacular here except for balance and its calm flow over the palate. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 14 21 in July 2022.
