1985 Dow's - Porto Vintage Port (750ml)
The more structured, drier counterpoint to the luscious Graham's from this celebrated vintage — and for many Port aficionados, the pick of the entire 1985 declarations. A gorgeous, very pure bouquet of mulberry, leather, terracotta tiles on a warm day, and hints of clove, all beautifully defined; the palate is very well balanced with supple tannin, lightly spiced on entry, with touches of licorice, black pepper, curry powder, and ginger leading to a very harmonious and long finish — Antonio Galloni noted it may well be the pick of the 1985 vintage. Aromas of walnuts, dried fruit, and raisins; surprisingly rich and powerful yet medium-bodied, concluding with a nutty finish. Dow's signature style — drier, more austere, and more mineral-driven than the sweeter Symington houses — makes this a Port for the dinner table as much as the dessert course. Now 40 years old and singing beautifully. Decant 2–3 hours. Drink now–2040
