Val di Suga has been producing wine in Montalcino since the 1970s and is based at Val di Cava, now part of the Angelini family's portfolio of Tuscan estates. The winery helped pioneer the idea of terroir-driven Brunello, and remains the only producer bottling three separate single-vineyard Brunellos, each sourced from its own distinct estate on a different side of Montalcino.

Vigna Spuntali is drawn from a fifteen-hectare vineyard on the southwestern side of the appellation, one of the oldest single-vineyard Brunellos in Montalcino. Vines here are over thirty years old and grow in sandy soils formed from degraded Pietraforte stone, in a warm, sea-influenced microclimate surrounded by olive groves and Mediterranean scrub. The wine is made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso and aged for two years in Slavonian oak before further time resting in bottle.

The 2019 offers ripe black cherry and blackberry aromas layered with candied citrus, tobacco, chocolate, and a distinct iodine minerality from the sea. The palate is creamy yet well structured, rounded out with vanilla and white chocolate over soft, velvety tannins. Pair it with braised beef cheeks or a rich dark chocolate dessert.

95 Points
"This is not a Riserva, but it acts like one because it is held back for an extra year of aging. The Val di Suga 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali is a very rich wine with dark fruit and nutty aromas of Thai peanut sauce, praline and walnut husk. The finish has a dry side, which gives the wine a more accessible overall personality, but it also shows a hint of soft cherry that breaks up the austerity you get on the finish. Only 9,000 bottles were created."
