Grown on the southwestern slopes of Montalcino, the 2019 Angelini (Val di Suga) Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali captures the precise terroir signature of a vineyard that has produced singular single-site Brunellos since the 1970s. The fifteen-hectare plot features vines exceeding thirty years in age, rooted in sandy soils washed down from ancient Pietraforte formations. A steady maritime breeze chills the afternoon sun, allowing the 100 percent Sangiovese Grosso grapes to develop thick skins and complex phenolic maturity before harvest.

Aging occurs exclusively in large Slavonian oak casks for twenty-four months, followed by additional bottle rest. This restrained wood regimen protects the primary fruit while coaxing out secondary complexity. The 2019 vintage displays an opaque garnet core with bright purple highlights. Early aromatics deliver concentrated black cherry, blackberry leaf, and candied orange zest, quickly deepening into notes of pipe tobacco, baking dark chocolate, and a characteristic saline undertone pulled directly from the coastal influence.

The mid-palate feels lush and creamy yet maintains firm internal tension. Soft, fully ripened tannins coat the mouth evenly, carrying flavors of white peppercorn, dried fig, and fine espresso through a persistent, warming finish. Because of its accessible structure at a relatively young age, this bottling bridges traditional Montalcino depth with modern fruit clarity, making it suitable for immediate consumption while retaining aging potential.

Food pairing focuses on proteins that stand up to Sangiovese’s natural acidity and moderate alcohol. Slow-roasted or braised beef shanks and lamb shoulder allow the wine’s savory cedar and mineral backbone to shine equally. For those preferring a lighter main course, wild mushroom risotto or hard cow’s milk cheeses work well. As the temperature drops, serve it alongside sugar-free dark chocolate tartlets or flourless chocolate cakes to mirror the wine’s inherent cocoa layers.

95 Points
"This is not a Riserva, but it acts like one because it is held back for an extra year of aging. The Val di Suga 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali is a very rich wine with dark fruit and nutty aromas of Thai peanut sauce, praline and walnut husk. The finish has a dry side, which gives the wine a more accessible overall personality, but it also shows a hint of soft cherry that breaks up the austerity you get on the finish. Only 9,000 bottles were created."
