2021 The Calling - Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles (750ml)
The Calling was founded by broadcaster Jim Nantz and wine industry veteran Peter Deutsch, two friends who bonded over the idea of pursuing a calling in life, whether behind a microphone or behind a family wine business. The winemaking is led by James MacPhail, a seasoned California winemaker known for his work across Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The brand draws fruit from several of California's top regions, including Sonoma, Monterey, and Paso Robles, letting each varietal reflect its specific origin.
This 2021 bottling comes from the Estrella District within Paso Robles, a broad stretch of valley floor and floodplain marked by ridgelines and the Estrella River running through it. Warm days here are balanced by maritime breezes and downslope winds, while alluvial soils ranging from sandy to clay loam suit Cabernet particularly well. The grapes underwent a cold soak before small-batch fermentation, and the finished wine is 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 18 months in French oak.
Deep plum red in the glass, this wine offers layers of ripe blackberry, mocha, and warm vanilla spice with a hint of nutmeg. The palate is bold, delivering cherry pie and coffee flavors that lead into a spicy, warm oak finish, backed by soft, approachable tannins. Pair it with grilled steak, barbecued short ribs, or a wedge of aged cheddar.
