The Marquis d'Angerville family's roots in Volnay stretch back more than five hundred years, and the estate was among the very first in Burgundy to bottle its own wine rather than sell to négociants. Today the domaine is farmed organically and biodynamically under Guillaume d'Angerville, whose gentle, hands-off approach in the cellar is meant to let each individual climat express itself with minimal interference.

Champans is the domaine's largest premier cru holding, nearly four hectares of south-east facing vines on deep clay-limestone soils directly north of Caillerets, and is often considered Volnay's archetypal expression in Guillaume's eyes. The grapes are destemmed and given a cold soak before fermenting with native yeasts, then aged mainly in used casks to preserve the purity of the fruit.

The wine offers plum and blackberry, layered with spice, earth, and a touch of crushed stone. Full-bodied yet refined, it has a plump, velvety texture and supple tannins that carry through a long, expressive finish. It pairs well with roast duck, seared venison, or a mature sheep's-milk cheese from the region.

"The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with

that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed

with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the

background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the

entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to;

perhaps the tannins are a bit rmer and less silky in texture at the

moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's

other cuvées.
