Asbach Spezial 15 yr Brandy 750ml
Asbach has been distilling in Rüdesheim am Rhein since 1892, when founder Hugo Asbach built the business on strict quality control and painstaking selection of raw material. A native of Cologne who trained in the German export cognac trade and refined his craft in France, Asbach later coined the term Weinbrand to describe German grape brandy once postwar treaty rules reserved the word Cognac for French producers. The Spezial-Brand line reflects that founding philosophy, sitting between the house's younger, brighter expressions and its oldest luxury bottlings.
Production begins with wine sourced from carefully chosen growing regions, distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills, first into a raw spirit and then refined into a finer distillate. The resulting brandy matures for a minimum of fifteen years in Limousin oak casks, a slow aging process that the distillery credits with striking a balance between youthful freshness and the depth typical of much older spirits.
In the glass, this brandy shows a dark gold color with a red hue. The nose leads with jasmine, layered with citrus, vanilla, and a touch of floral green apple. The palate turns elegant and vinous, soft and well-rounded, with light sweetness and a barely perceptible edge of bitterness. The finish carries on for a remarkably long time.
