Antonio Galloni of Vinous doesn’t hand out praise lightly. His verdict on 2021 Barbaresco: “In conclusion, all the conditions required for a good to great vintage were met. Not surprisingly, the average quality of the wines is exceptionally high.”

He calls the wines “vivid, exceptionally beautiful wines that show the heights Nebbiolo can reach,” and says the early promise of 2021 is “no longer a question of potential but of reality.”

Galloni judges a vintage against a five-point framework, inspired by Bordeaux’s Denis Dubourdieu and built on 20+ years of walking Piedmont’s vineyards:

1. A long growing season
2. Big day-to-night temperature swings during the final ripening phase
3. No shock weather like hail or heat spikes
4. Stable weather in the last month before harvest
5. An October harvest 

2021 met the conditions. James Suckling’s report backs it up. He describes big day-to-night temperature swings at harvest, cooler temperatures and lower pH, with ripe, polished tannins, in a vintage he titles “Taking Finesse to a New Level.” Lower pH means fresher, more age-worthy wines, which is why 2021s have both perfume and backbone. And we couldn't agree more.
