Silver Oak was founded in 1972 by two friends, Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer, who set out with a singular ambition: to produce California Cabernet Sauvignon aged entirely in American oak. Since that first vintage, the winery has held to a philosophy of releasing wines only when they are ready to drink, favoring a fully developed, velvety style over one that demands years in the cellar before it opens up. The winery's commitment to craft eventually led it to purchase its own cooperage in Missouri, giving the team direct control over every stave used in aging. Now under winemaker Nate Weis, Silver Oak remains one of Napa's most recognizable producers of single-varietal Cabernet.

The 2019 Napa Valley bottling draws fruit from premier vineyards across the valley, including the estate's own Jump Rock and Soda Canyon sites, and is blended predominantly with Merlot alongside small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. This vintage marked a turning point for the winery's oak program, as extensive trials led the team to settle on a twenty-four month air-drying period and a precise ninety minute toast for the American oak barrels, a combination that shifted the wine toward a more savory, focused character than prior years. After two years aging in barrel, the wine spends additional time resting in bottle before release.

The nose shows black cherry and huckleberry with dry floral notes, joined by a light touch of sweet nutmeg from the oak. On the palate, silky tannins build through a fruit-forward mid-palate into a long, balanced finish. It pairs beautifully with a well-marbled ribeye, braised short ribs, or aged hard cheeses.

95 Points
"So elegant, supple and silky, this vintage is a dream to drink now, but should also have plenty of life ahead of it. Aromas of blueberries and dark chocolate meld with luxe black fruit, mint and cocoa on the palate. A blend of 77% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot and dashes of cabernet franc and petit verdot. Drink or hold through at least 2030."
