2023 Meix Foulot - Mercurey Clos du Ch. de Montaigu (750ml)
Domaine du Meix Foulot has stayed in the hands of the de Launay family for eight generations, with roots that trace back to Edouard de Suremain, who worked to protect the Mercurey terroir as early as 1923, well before the appellation itself was officially recognized in 1936. Agnès Dewé de Launay has run the estate since 1996, farming about twenty hectares under High Environmental Value certification and continuing a long family commitment to the village.
Clos du Château de Montaigu is a walled monopole of just under two hectares, sitting at the foot of the ruined château that gives the wine its name, right beneath the domaine's own windows. Though the site faces the Saône plain, it catches sun throughout the day. The vines range from forty to seventy years old and are pruned short, with a green harvest used to keep yields low when needed.
The wine combines ripe sour cherry with dry forest-floor aromas, along with hints of wild berry and blackcurrant. The palate is concentrated and beautifully balanced, medium bodied and well structured, with a long, straight finish and a light peppery edge. Serve it with grilled lamb chops, roast pheasant, or aged Gruyère.
