NV von Buhl - Riesling Sekt
Reichsrat von Buhl was founded in Deidesheim in 1849 by Franz Peter Buhl, and its wines were famously served at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The estate was revived after Achim Niederberger bought it in 2013, and today it is certified organic, with parcels in some of the Pfalz’s most revered Riesling sites.
Former Bollinger cellar master Mathieu Kauffmann joined for the 2013 vintage and pushed for earlier picking and lower sulfur, setting the template for the house sparkling wines. The Riesling is picked early to keep acidity high, and only the first, gentlest part of the pressing is used. After a short maceration, the base wine ferments and rests in stainless steel and large 2,400 liter barrels. It then undergoes a second fermentation in bottle by the traditional method and ages on its lees for about 20 months before release as a dry brut.
Lemon zest, lime, and white peach rise from the glass, joined by white flowers, toasty brioche, and crushed slate. The palate is crisp and tightly wound, with green and red apple, firm acidity, and a delicate, creamy mousse. A mineral undertow and a spicy, toasty finish add lift and length. Bright, dry, and precise.
