2020 Luke Wines - Red Blend Columbia Valley Wahluke Slope (750ml)
Luke Wines was founded in 2012 by Charlie Vogele and his wife Kristin, who set out to put a spotlight on Washington's Wahluke Slope, a region long overshadowed by better known Columbia Valley neighbors despite producing a significant share of the state's wine grapes. The winery's name nods to both the appellation and a folkloric frontier character invoked on its labels, and Luke has since built a reputation for rich, focused reds that showcase the rugged, sunbaked character of its home vineyards.
This red blend draws primarily from Wahluke Slope fruit, a warm, south facing growing region shaped by an alluvial fan that channels heat and sunlight down toward the Columbia River. The blend leans on a Bordeaux framework built around Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a thread of Syrah woven in to add depth and lift. Limited use of new oak keeps the wine's fruit character vivid rather than masking it, a winemaking choice that has become something of a hallmark for the region's better producers.
The glass offers dark fruit flavors of blackberry and plum layered with warm spice, coffee, and a touch of chocolate and vanilla. Tannins are silky and well integrated, supported by enough acidity to keep the wine feeling lively rather than heavy. Its richness and structure make it a good match for grilled lamb, hearty barbecue, or a wedge of aged cheddar.
