NV Jansz - Brut Tasmania Premium Cuvee
Jansz takes its name from Abel Janszoon Tasman, the Dutch explorer who first charted the island in 1642, and the winery has a similarly adventurous origin story. Founded in 1986 with input from the Champagne house Louis Roederer, which had gone searching abroad for a cool-climate terroir worthy of its standards, Jansz became the first Tasmanian producer to craft sparkling wine using the traditional method. The estate now sits under the Hill-Smith family's Yalumba group, with vineyards spread across twenty-three individual one-hectare blocks that the winemaker walks and tastes through each growing season.
This cuvée blends Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sourced from several of Tasmania's cool-climate sites, including Pipers River and the Coal River Valley, planted on red, free-draining basalt soils. The grapes are hand-picked, pressed as whole bunches, and undergo full malolactic fermentation before a secondary fermentation in bottle. The wine then rests on its lees for an extended period, often close to two years, before release.
It pours pale straw gold with a fine, persistent mousse, opening with honeysuckle, citrus zest, and white flowers, layered with nougat, roasted nuts, and a touch of brioche. The palate is creamy yet fresh, carrying apple and pear fruit through a long, balanced finish. It suits oysters, light seafood, or simply an afternoon aperitif.
