2020 Horizon de Bichot - Limoux Chardonnay

Albert Bichot has been introducing Burgundy's great wines to the world since 1831, and the Horizon de Bichot project carries that same exploratory spirit south into the Languedoc. Rather than staying within Burgundy's borders, the house set out to find a new expression of its signature grape, Chardonnay, and settled on Limoux, a terroir prized for its unusual diversity. The wines are made at a winery in Gardie, near Carcassonne, blending fruit from four distinct local climates into a single, well-rounded cuvée.

Because it's a single-varietal Chardonnay rather than a blend, this wine is classified as Vin de France instead of under the Limoux appellation, even though all the fruit comes from that region. Grapes are drawn from four separate zones around Limoux, each shaped by different wind patterns and sun exposure: a windswept, citrus-driven site to the west, a warmer, more sheltered zone that gives richness and butter, and higher, cooler vineyards that add freshness and finesse. Blending these distinct parcels together is what gives the finished wine its balance of structure and lift.

The 2020 shows a bright, medium gold color with aromas of white flowers, citrus zest, peach, and hazelnut. On the palate, flavors of almond and grapefruit meet a touch of vanilla, all carried by a smooth, creamy texture and lively acidity through a long, citrus-tinged finish. It pairs well with seared halibut, chicken in a light cream sauce, or a plate of soft goat cheese.
