2020 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac

A model of classic Pauillac restraint from this consistently excellent fifth-growth estate, owned by the Borie family since 1978. The 2020 leans more Cabernet-dominant than recent vintages — 76% Cabernet Sauvignon to 24% Merlot — giving it a structured, focused frame built on cassis, plum, pencil shavings, violets, and loamy soil, with a touch of creamy new oak in support. Medium to full-bodied, pure and fleshy on the palate, with lively acidity, powdery tannins, and real depth at the core. Supple and charming now, but with the underlying structure to reward patience. A textbook expression of Pauillac's cassis-and-graphite signature at a fraction of what the neighboring first growths command.

"The 2020 Grand-Puy-Lacoste fulfils its promise from barrel. It has a very

sophisticated and complex bouquet with black fruit, pencil shavings and

light estuarine scents, beautifully defined and focused. The palate has real

intensity and concentration, the precision belying a very intense GPL not

unlike the 2016 with a persistent graphite-infused finish that is just pure

finesse. Magnificent.
