From one of Rioja's most exciting young producers — José Gil (son of Bodegas Olmaza) and partner Vicky Fernández farm just five hectares organically, working in a style that echoes old-school carbonic Rioja rather than modern oak-driven convention. El Bardallo is a single-vineyard, paraje-designated wine fermented with partial whole-cluster fruit and aged 10 months in 500-liter French oak. 2023 was a smaller, hail-affected harvest that José Gil himself called "medium-good" — slightly riper and more balanced than the arid 2022 vintage. Expect the house style: vibrant, juicy red fruit, chalky fine-grained tannins, and the aromatic lift and energy that's made this one of the most talked-about new names in Rioja Alta.
"The 2023 El Bardallo was produced with Tempranillo and 10% Viura from three plots in the lieu-dit that names the wine at 555 meters above sea level, one of them ungrafted and all on soils with a high content of calcium carbonate. It fermented with 15% full clusters in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter barrels for 11 months. The 2023s tend to have lower alcohol and more freshness and acidity than the 2022s; for example, this has 13.6% alcohol. They seem to have removed any trace of fat from this wine, and it's fine-boned and serious, not exuberant. It has a very chalky palate through the texture of the tannins. It should be long lived. 3,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024. I previewed this wine from 2024 and it could be the wine of the year together with Camino de Ribas, slightly above La Canoca. But it's too early to talk..."
—Luis Gutierrez -Wine Advocate
"There’s a pleasing, up-front tension and drive to this fresh red, with taut tannins lending fine definition to concentrated flavors of brambly blackberry and blueberry, wild sage, licorice root and graphite. Shows compact expression at first, but the profile expands nicely on the palate. Minerally salt and iron notes gain momentum through the racy, herb-laced finish. Best from 2027 through 2040. 203 cases made, 30 cases imported."
