2019 Poggio Antico - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (750ml)
Poggio Antico was founded in 1976 on the highest vineyard hill south of Montalcino, a position that gives the estate one of the most distinctive terroirs in the appellation. The property spans roughly 91 acres at an average altitude of nearly 1,800 feet, divided into 15 separate soil units defined by their mix of calcareous rock and galestro. The estate farms mainly Sangiovese, with smaller plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and has moved fully into organic viticulture, relying on practices like green manure and permanent grassing to keep the soil healthy.
The Riserva is made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, and 2019 is considered one of the finest Brunello vintages in decades. A cool, wet start to the season built up soil moisture and slowed the growing cycle, while a stable, moderately warm summer allowed the grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness. The late harvest brought in fruit rich in tannins and anthocyanins while retaining fresh acidity, and the wine then underwent the extended barrel and bottle aging required of a Riserva.
The bouquet layers geranium and magnolia with ripe cherry, plum, and warm, earthy spice. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and structured, with silky, well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity carrying through a long finish. It pairs well with braised short rib, roasted game birds, or a piece of aged Grana Padano.
