Four generations of the Bouley family have made wine in Volnay. Today the domaine is run by Thomas Bouley, who joined his father, Jean-Marc, in 2002 and took over the cellar in 2012. The winery sits beneath the family home on a steep, narrow street in the village. Its cellars, built by a retired railroad engineer, look like train tunnels. Bouley farms 29 plots across Volnay, Pommard, Beaune and Meursault. He follows biodynamic principles and uses no fertilizers.

This village Volnay blends up to fourteen parcels from around the appellation, with vines between thirty and more than sixty years old. Clay-rich plots on the lower slopes give the wine richness and depth. Parcels higher up, on thin, limestone-heavy soils, add tension and lift. The grapes were fully destemmed and fermented in concrete and stainless steel with gentle pump-overs. The wine then aged for eighteen months in barrel, with only a small share of new oak.

The 2022 offers cassis, cherry and rose petal, with a hint of baking chocolate. The palate is medium to full-bodied, rich and textured, with good density and firm structure underneath the fruit. Serve it with roast lamb, coq au vin or mushroom risotto.

91 Points
"The 2022 Volnay Village offers up aromas of cassis, cherries, rose petals and baking chocolate, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and textural palate with good density and structure. It's the usual blend combining holdings in the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin—which bring fat and flesh—with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes—that lend the wine its tension and relief."
