2023 Purcari - Freedom Red Blend (750ml)

Chateau Purcari is one of Moldova's most storied wineries, with roots stretching back to 1827 in the Stefan Voda region along the Dniester River near the Ukrainian border. Today it is part of the Purcari Wineries Group, a major player across Central and Eastern Europe that manages vineyards and production across Romania, Moldova, and Bulgaria. Freedom Blend was created as a tribute to the resilience of Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, with proceeds supporting Ukrainian relief efforts.

The wine unites three indigenous grapes from three nations: Saperavi from Georgia, Rara Neagra from Moldova, and Bastardo, a Ukrainian heritage variety, grown in the vineyards of Stefan Voda. After traditional vinification, the blend matures for six to twelve months in French oak, which builds structure and spice without masking the fruit.

In the glass this wine shows a deep ruby color. The nose offers cherry, blackberry, and plum, layered with hints of violet, leather, and vanilla. On the palate it is full bodied, with dried plum, black pepper, and firm, supple tannins carrying through to a long finish. It pairs well with grilled lamb, roasted beef, or aged hard cheeses like Manchego.
