2023 Picariello Ciro 906 – Fiano di Avellino DOCG (750ml)

From Picariello, one of Italy’s most cult-followed producers, the 2023 Ciro 906 is the flagship bottling. This wine comes from a single parcel—number 906 on the official Avellino map—sourced at 650 meters elevation. These are the estate’s oldest vines, first planted by Ciro in 1990.

Production is intentionally selective: the wine is released only in cooler vintages with higher acidity, and just 3,500 bottles are made.

Winemaking details: 40-day fermentation with native yeast, then 12 months of aging on the lees in stainless steel with frequent batonnage, followed by at least 12 months in bottle before release. The wine is not filtered, not fined, and there is no oak influence at any stage.

2023 tasting profile: a pure, mineral-driven expression. On the nose, it presents crisp green pear, lemon zest, and white flowers, layered over a powerful core of crushed flint, smoke, and savory herbs. On the palate it is medium-bodied, taut, and energetic, with vibrant, electric acidity framing pristine orchard fruit. It is serious and ageworthy, yet eminently drinkable now, with the potential to develop beautifully for 10–15 years.

Why it stands out: this is not produced every year and is widely regarded as one of Italy’s leading white wines.

Wine details: 750 ml • not filtered • not fined • no oak.

93 Points
"From one of the most talented producers who works with this special white grape from Campania, the Ciro Picariello 2023 Fiano di Avellino opens to citrusy notes that range from fresh tangerine to tart lemon drop. Beyond the fruit, the wine produces complementary aromas of crushed oystershell and a hint of spicy saffron. The key element to this wine is the exceptional balance, coupled with pretty intensity, that defines the mouthfeel. Only stainless steel is used, and the grapes are sourced from high-elevation vineyards (from 600 to 700 meters above sea level) on volcanic clay soils between the villages of Summonte and Montefredane. Production is 40,000 bottles."
