One of South Africa's most coveted and quietly legendary white wines — and one of the most charming origin stories in the entire Cape wine world. In 2018, winemaker Alex Milner made a small amount of Chenin Blanc at Natte Valleij for his wife — his only white wine, from a single old, ocean-facing Darling vineyard planted in 1985. When he realized that 360 bottles was far too much for one household, he quietly offered half to a wine merchant. That first commercial release went on to earn Platter's Five Stars, and Axle has since become one of South Africa's most sought-after, under-the-radar Chenins. Sourced from 1985-planted dry-land bush vines grown in Darling's decomposed granite soils, naturally fermented in seasoned barrels and aged sur lie for nine months, the Axle is minimalist winemaking at its most confident and expressive. The 2025 vintage presents an inviting bouquet of ripe pear, subtle spice, and striking minerality, with a textural palate of wild pear, herbal lemon, and a touch of lees, while a crisp acidity and flinty finish with a whisper of tangerine pith adds freshness and complexity. As Jancis Robinson contributor Tamlyn Currin memorably put it, this wine occupies the full light — luminous, precise, honeyed and creamy, yet peppery and so taut it feels about to snap into a thousand shards. Every vintage sells out fast. Don't wait.
