Tres Tribus TOBALA Artesanal Joven Mezcal 700ml
Tres Tribus is hand-crafted by fifth-generation mezcalero Juan Antonio Coronel in San Francisco Nuxaño, high in the pine-covered mountains of Oaxaca. A descendant of Zapotec and Mixtec lineage, Coronel carries forward techniques passed down through his family for generations. The brand itself was founded by Altos Planos co-founder Juan Coronado, who first tasted Coronel's mezcal on a trip to Oaxaca in the mid-1990s and later built Tres Tribus around his work. It has since become the first and only Certified B Corporation in the mezcal category, operating as a fully carbon-neutral producer.
This bottling is distilled from wild Tobalá agave, a rare, compact species (Agave potatorum) that spends roughly a decade in the ground before it reaches maturity, concentrating its sugars far beyond faster-growing varieties. The harvested hearts are cooked underground for up to a week over encino oak, then hand-mashed with wooden mallets rather than machine milled. Fermentation takes place in underground cement amphoras with volcanic spring water and native yeast, followed by a double distillation in copper. The result is bottled unaged as a joven, preserving the agave's raw character.
The nose opens with caramelized pineapple, quince, dried banana, and a trace of jasmine. On the palate, fig, cacao, and a touch of lychee unfold into a rich, layered sweetness that lingers into a smooth, floral finish.
