2017 Trimbach - Pinot Gris Reserve Personnelle (750ml)
Trimbach has made wine in the medieval town of Ribeauvillé since 1626, with the same family now guiding the estate through thirteen generations. Rather than favor a particular style trend, the house has built its reputation on precision and restraint, producing wines meant to be aged in bottle at the winery until they show their best, not rushed onto shelves young.
Réserve Personnelle Pinot Gris is drawn from Trimbach's finest estate parcels, including fruit from three plots within the Osterberg Grand Cru, and is made only in vintages the family considers strong enough to merit it. The clay and limestone soils of these sites lend the wine its characteristic acidity. After a gentle pressing and a cold settling of the juice, fermentation proceeds slowly to protect the grape's natural aromatics, and the wine skips malolactic conversion entirely, preserving its fresh, taut backbone. Around 20,000 bottles are produced in a typical release year.
The 2017 pours a bright pale gold and opens with apricot, ripe pear, and a whisper of botrytis on the nose. The palate is full and mouth-filling, round yet lifted by a vivid mineral streak, with sweet spice and citrus carrying through to a long, saline finish. It stood up beautifully to lobster, roast pork, or richly sauced poultry.
