Trimbach has made wine in the medieval town of Ribeauvillé since 1626, with the same family now guiding the estate through thirteen generations. Rather than favor a particular style trend, the house has built its reputation on precision and restraint, producing wines meant to be aged in bottle at the winery until they show their best, not rushed onto shelves young.

Réserve Personnelle Pinot Gris is drawn from Trimbach's finest estate parcels, including fruit from three plots within the Osterberg Grand Cru, and is made only in vintages the family considers strong enough to merit it. The clay and limestone soils of these sites lend the wine its characteristic acidity. After a gentle pressing and a cold settling of the juice, fermentation proceeds slowly to protect the grape's natural aromatics, and the wine skips malolactic conversion entirely, preserving its fresh, taut backbone. Around 20,000 bottles are produced in a typical release year.

The 2017 pours a bright pale gold and opens with apricot, ripe pear, and a whisper of botrytis on the nose. The palate is full and mouth-filling, round yet lifted by a vivid mineral streak, with sweet spice and citrus carrying through to a long, saline finish. It stood up beautifully to lobster, roast pork, or richly sauced poultry.

95 Points
"Assembled in the very best plots of the domaine and made only in great vintages, Trimbach's bright-colored 2017 Pinot Gris Réserve Personnelle opens with a clear, fresh and aromatic bouquet of fully ripe white fruit with hints of caramel. Mouth-filling and round on the palate, this is a complex and vivaciously mineral Pinot Gris with stimulating grip and tension on the long and powerful yet also elegant, persistently saline and lemony finish. This is a superb Pinot Gris that luckily did not ferment to fully dry but to remarkable balance. This is a great Alsace Pinot Gris to be served with lobster, poultry or white meats. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023."

"From a couple of vineyards, one next to Osterberg. Acidity 6.2 g/l, and RS 15 g/l.

This sounds weird, but the flavours of this wine start off like flat-white coffee with a shot of caramel! Then peppermint cream giving way to masses of purple florals – irises and violets. It’s a little bit heady; ‘boudoir’, in a good way. It’s curvy and caressing, creamy and languid, with long, breathy warmth lingering on the end. Very complex, very unusual, very striking. (TC) 14%
