Domaine Albert Boxler has worked the granite slopes of Niedermorschwihr since 1673, and today the thirteen-hectare family estate is led by Jean Boxler, grandson of the domaine's namesake, alongside his wife Sylvie. The property is distinguished by its steep, terraced vineyards that demand manual labor at nearly every stage, and Jean's ongoing study of Burgundy has shaped his approach to reds in particular, making the domaine one of the most respected names in Alsace across both white and red wines.

The "S" designates grand cru Sommerberg, the granite hillside where this Pinot Noir is grown, a site whose thin, fast-draining soils naturally limit water and produce small, concentrated berries. The 2020 vintage is considered one of the finest for Pinot Noir that Alsace has seen, with grapes hand-picked and partially destemmed before a natural fermentation with native yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks. The wine is then aged exclusively in neutral barrels, a choice that lets the site's mineral character come through rather than adding oak influence.

The nose carries subtle smoky notes alongside ripe black cherry, while the palate stays precise and lively, framed by clean acidity that carries through to a long finish. The tannins are notably smooth, giving the wine a silky texture despite its structure and depth. It pairs naturally with roast chicken, grilled white meats, or a charcuterie board.

94 Points
"From a cooler 42-are plot in the south-facing part of the Sommerberg and from 50- to 70-year-old vines, the 2020 Pinot Noir S shows a clear, pretty coolish, refined and very elegant, precise and fresh, ripe sour-cherry bouquet intertwined with lovely flinty and herbal notes. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and intense, fresh and very elegant, well-concentrated and persistent Pinot Noir from granite soils. The finish has hints of tar and is intense and structured, crisp and stimulatingly bitter. The grapes were picked before the Rieslings and macerated with 50% whole clusters for three weeks without pigèage. After the pressing, the fermentation finishes in tanks before the wine is racked into used Burgundy barrels in December for one year. Even for bottling, the wine has never been pumped. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered in December 2021 with a small production of five barrels. The wine represents the place rather than the vintage and thus has remarkable freshness, precision and elegance."
