2023 Weinbach - Furstentum Grand Cru Pinots (1.5L)

Domaine Weinbach sits at the foot of the Schlossberg hill in Kaysersberg, on ground that has carried vines since the 9th century and was first built into a winery in 1612 by Capuchin monks. The Faller brothers bought the estate in 1898, and Théo Faller later expanded its holdings into several top vineyards before his wife Colette and daughters Catherine and Laurence continued his work. Catherine Faller has led the domaine since 2016 alongside her sons Eddy and Théo, farming the estate's thirty-eight hectares under strict organic and biodynamic practices.

The 2023 Pinots Furstentum is a Grand Cru blend built on roughly two-thirds Pinot Gris and one-third Pinot Blanc, sourced from vines planted in limestone, clay, and sandstone soils on the Furstentum slope. The site's exposure and mineral-rich ground give the grapes a naturally sharp, sculpted acidity even as they ripen fully. The wine is raised across a mix of small barrique, larger 600-liter casks, and concrete tank, with a portion of new oak, a combination meant to build texture while keeping the fruit's edge intact.

Steely orange and lemon pulp lead the way here, with patience revealing subtler notes of salt, toasted nut, and softening peach beneath the surface. The acidity stays taut and precise, cutting through the wine's underlying richness rather than being smoothed over by it. Pair it with fresh crab cakes, roast turkey, or a nutty aged Emmental.
