Dartigalongue is the oldest house in Bas-Armagnac, founded in Nogaro in 1838 by Pascal Dartigalongue during the reign of King Louis Philippe, for whom this cuvée is named. The estate remains family-owned generations later, still producing entirely artisanal Armagnac, and Cuvée Louis-Philippe was first created in 1998 to mark the house's 160th anniversary, with this edition released for its 180th.

This blend draws from five distinct vintages, 1979, 1983, 1986, 1992, and 1994, chosen by the cellar master for how well they complement one another. The eaux-de-vie come from Ugni Blanc, Baco, and Folle Blanche grapes grown in the sandy, silty soils of western Bas-Armagnac, distilled slowly through a traditional continuous alembic to retain maximum aromatic complexity. Aging takes place primarily in Gascon oak rather than the Limousin oak more common elsewhere, a choice that lends the finished spirit a spicier character, and the barrels are held across eighteen separate cellars before final blending.

The nose is refined and expressive, opening with white flowers, honey, and blond tobacco before subtle rancio and leather emerge with air. On the palate, silky tannins carry candied fruit and bright freshness, closing on a remarkably long finish balanced between licorice and gentle smoke. This is a reflective, after-dinner pour, equally suited to sipping alone or alongside a fine cigar.
