Francis Darroze 1986 Chateau de Lahitte 37 yr Bas-Armagnac 750ml
Francis Darroze built his reputation as the son of celebrated chef Jean Darroze, channeling a family passion for tradition into a decades-long search for exceptional individual estate Armagnacs that began in the 1950s. Rather than owning vineyards himself, Darroze scoured Gascony for the finest small producers, and this vintage comes from Château de Lahitte in Courrensan, a twenty-five hectare estate on boulbènes soil produced by Madame de Lamothe, one of the roughly thirty partner domaines Darroze has worked with over the years.
This 1986 vintage is a blend of sixty-seven percent Ugni Blanc and thirty-three percent Colombard, continuously distilled to fifty-five percent alcohol before aging in local oak barrels for thirty-seven years. In keeping with house practice, the spirit is matured in its own individual cask rather than blended with other domaines or vintages, and its final proof was reached entirely through natural evaporation over decades in barrel rather than through dilution with water.
The color is a brilliant amber, and the nose is rustic yet elegant, marked by licorice, leather, cinnamon, clove, and toast, aromas typical of an Armagnac of this age. On the palate, the balance between alcohol, tannin, and aroma is remarkable, with candied fruit, hard candy, and gingerbread lingering through a long, complex finish. This is a rare, contemplative pour best suited to slow sipping neat, on its own or to mark a special occasion.
