Mother Block comes from Chalmers, a family estate in Merbein, in Australia's Murray Darling region, where Bruce and Jenni Chalmers began growing grapes in the 1980s before launching a nursery business now responsible for importing close to 70 new grape clones and varieties into Australia. Their roughly 86-acre "Mother Block" estate sits at the heart of the family's home and business, and millions of vines planted throughout Australia trace their origin to this distinctive vineyard, which is certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

This bottling is a co-fermented field blend led by 62% Sagrantino and 17% Nero d'Avola, rounded out with 7% Aglianico, 6% Sangiovese, 5% Uva di Troia, 2% Teroldego, and 1% Piedirosso, all from the estate vineyard at Merbein. The 2022 growing season saw summer temperatures well below average with cooler nights, allowing for a longer hang time that developed more flavor while retaining higher natural acidity. The varietals were co-fermented and aged in stainless steel.

The finished wine offers supple red cherry, cranberry, floral, and peppery spice aromas up front. The palate is midweight with lovely tang, and cat's-tongue tannins rein in a riot of red-berry fruit. Expect bright brambly berries, tart cherry, and earthy cocoa notes, with a structured yet fresh and friendly palate showing black cherry and blueberry, finishing with subtle saline undertones.

This is a bright, fresh red that pairs well with grilled chicken wings or other casual, savory fare, best enjoyed on a warm evening.
