The 2024 Freiheit earned 91 Points from James Suckling, continuing a remarkable streak of consistent critical acclaim for this beloved entry-level bottling from one of Austria's most revered estates. The name "Freiheit" — meaning "freedom" — is believed to refer to some of the first privately owned vineyard land in the valley not controlled by the Church or a feudal estate, lending this unpretentious, joyful wine a history as fascinating as it is delicious.  

Martin Nigl is a first-generation winemaker who began in 1985 after convincing his family to bottle their own fruit rather than sell it to the local cooperative — and today he farms sustainably, never using herbicides or insecticides, plants cover crops of legumes and herbs, and works almost exclusively in stainless steel, using only ambient yeasts, settling musts by gravity, racking twice, and never fining before bottling. The Freiheit is sourced from vineyards in the hills above Krems, picked earlier than Nigl's Senftenberg fruit to preserve maximum freshness, and bottled at night when the cellars are at their coolest.
