2023 Chateau Rauzan Segla - Margaux (750ml)
2023 Château Rauzan-Ségla — Margaux 2ème Grand Cru Classé
The history of Château Rauzan-Ségla dates back to 1661 when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the estate. The property is today owned by the Wertheimer family of the fashion house Chanel and managed by Nicolas Audebert, with vineyards of 51 hectares stretching around the château with additional parcels near Château Margaux and Brane-Cantenac. The land has been organically farmed since 2019 and achieved official organic certification in 2023. With 21 soil types, 4 varieties, and 150 parcels, Audebert describes the estate as "an amazing Margaux patchwork — the wines are like a symphony."
The 2023 vintage presented a defining challenge: the estate lost 50% of its Merlot to mildew and black rot, resulting in the highest Cabernet Sauvignon proportion ever recorded in the grand vin. The final blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.5% Merlot, and 1.5% Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in oak with 55% new barrels, at a yield of 30 hl/ha.
Deep garnet-purple in the glass, the 2023 bursts with flamboyant notes of Morello cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, violets, and licorice, giving way to rosebud tea, crushed rocks, and Sichuan pepper. The medium-bodied palate delivers amazing tension to offset shiny black and red berry layers, framed by velvety tannins, finishing long and perfumed.
