Revived by Tom Bulleit in the 1980s based on a family recipe dating back to 1830, Bulleit is a high-rye bourbon that leans spicier and more assertive than most mid-shelf bourbons. Aged a minimum of 4 years, it shows a nose of vanilla and light citrus, moving into a bold, dry palate of oak, nutmeg, and clove, with a long, spicy finish that reflects the higher rye content in the mash bill. A versatile, well-priced bourbon that holds up well in cocktails — particularly Old Fashioneds and Manhattans — thanks to its assertive spice backbone.
