Asbach traces its origins to 1892, when Hugo Asbach founded the company in Rüdesheim am Rhein, a town along the Rhine long associated with German winemaking. After World War I, when the Treaty of Versailles restricted use of the word Cognac to French products, it was Asbach himself who coined the term Weinbrand, or wine spirit, giving Germany its own official classification for grape brandy. The company remained in the Asbach family until 1991, and Selection 21 stands today as the house's most refined expression, built on Hugo Asbach's original principles of strict selection and careful aging.

Only distillates from top vintages and the finest wine-growing regions are chosen for this bottling, then matured separately for a minimum of twenty-one years before master blenders combine them into a single cuvée. The brandy rests in Limousin oak casks throughout this extended aging, a process that develops its deep color and layered character well beyond what younger Weinbrand can achieve.

The nose is richly complex, offering dried fig, date, orange marmalade, and dark chocolate alongside polished oak. On the palate, toffee, roasted nuts, and candied citrus peel unfold with cocoa and gentle spice notes of clove, nutmeg, and vanilla. The finish is exceptionally long and warming, closing on dried fruit and refined oak.
