Asbach Uralt is the flagship expression of Germany's oldest brandy house, founded in 1892 by Hugo Asbach in Rüdesheim am Rhein. It was Asbach who coined the term Weinbrand for German grape brandy after the Treaty of Versailles reserved the word Cognac for French producers, and Uralt has carried that classification since it became official German wine law in 1923. The brandy became a cultural fixture over the following decades, later forming the base spirit of Rüdesheimer Kaffee, the famous German coffee cocktail created in 1957.

Uralt is produced from carefully selected wines through traditional distillation, then rests for a minimum of three years in small Limousin oak barrels. The distillery describes its finishing process as a closely guarded maturing and refining method passed down through generations, a step the company credits with giving the brandy its distinctive character within the broader Weinbrand category.

The finished brandy shows a dark topaz color with an elegant blend of vinous and spicy aromas, rounded out by notes of wood and a hint of cocoa. On the palate, it is full-bodied and grape-forward, with ripe sweetness balanced against spiced oak. The finish carries light smoky wood, more cocoa, and a firm, warming grip of tannin.

"Asbach is a fine old brandy, Double distilled, matured in Limousin oak barrels over a long period and imporved by the secret Asbach refining process untill it acquires its unique, unmistakable taste and full-bodied, rounded flavor."
