Carlos I traces its roots to Osborne, a family business founded in 1772 in El Puerto de Santa María, in the Cádiz province of Andalusia. The brandy itself dates to 1889, when a master winemaker rediscovered old casks of aging brandy in the cellars and named the spirit after King Charles I of Spain, drawing inspiration from Titian's 1548 equestrian portrait of the monarch. The PX Cask expression is part of the modern Carlos I Collection, overseen today by master blender Marcos Alguacil.

This bottling undergoes a distinctive double-aging process. The brandy first spends four years in casks that previously held Osborne's own Amontillado and Oloroso sherries, some of which had matured those wines for more than fifty years. It then moves into century-old butts from the house's PX Viejo Solera, founded in 1905, for a final year of maturation, absorbing the concentrated sweetness of one of Osborne's most decorated Pedro Ximénez sherries.

The result is mahogany in color with intense reddish reflections. The nose shows caramelized oak, toasted cocoa nibs, and black liquorice, harmonizing with sultanas and fig bread from the PX casks. The palate turns velvety, closing on a long finish marked by caramelized oak and raisin.
