Gran Duque d'Alba Gran Reserva Brandy 750ml
Gran Duque de Alba comes from Bodegas Williams & Humbert, founded in 1877 by brothers-in-law Alexander Williams and Arthur Humbert in Jerez de la Frontera, at the heart of Spain's sherry country. The brandy itself launched in 1945 and takes its name from Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel, the Great Duke of Alba, a celebrated sixteenth-century Spanish general and diplomat who served as an advisor to two kings and governor of several territories under the crown.
Production begins with a selection of Palomino and Airén white wines, distilled into the base spirit known as holandas. The brandy then ages in American oak casks previously used for oloroso sherry, moving through the traditional criaderas y soleras system down through multiple tiers of casks. The solera itself dates back to 1890 and remains in continuous use, with only a small portion drawn each year and immediately replaced, so every bottle carries brandy from more than a century of vintages blended together.
The result pours a mahogany color with golden highlights. The bouquet is complex, layering oak, prune, and sherry with hints of vanilla and baking spice. The palate is medium-dry, smooth, and full-bodied, offering caramel, chocolate, and orange, closing on a long, satisfying finish.
