Domaine Marquis d'Angerville has been a fixture in Volnay for generations and was one of the first Burgundy estates to bottle its own wine, well before that practice became standard. Guillaume d'Angerville now leads the property, continuing a long-standing commitment to biodynamic farming and a minimalist approach in the cellar that lets the individual character of each vineyard come through clearly.

Clos des Ducs is a walled monopole of just over two hectares at the top of the village, often described as grand cru in all but name. Compared to the estate's other Volnays, it shows a denser structure and finer grain, the result of its elevated, well-drained site. The vines are farmed biodynamically and hand-harvested, then aged with only a light touch of new oak.

The wine shows ripe cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, layered with violet, rose, and a touch of leather and forest floor. Silky and finely structured, it carries a mineral edge through a long, refined finish that rewards patience. It pairs well with roast pheasant, venison, or a well-aged farmhouse cheese.

95 Points
"The 2022 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru is another to add to the canon

of outstanding wines from this monopole. It has retained the bouquet

with mineral-laden dark berry fruit, perhaps less tea-leaf scents and

more of the forest floor. Very well defined. The palate is mediumbodied with filigree tannins, a little more grip than it demonstrated

from barrel with a structured finish. It is unapologetically classic in

style, far more reserved and less fleshy than its peers in this vintage,

but it exudes breeding
