2021 Barnett Vineyards - Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (750ml)
2021 Barnett Vineyards - Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (750ml)
From the hillside estate founded in 1983 by Hal and Fiona Barnett, this 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon embodies Spring Mountain’s elevated character: a steep, forested parcel along Spring Mountain Road, high above St. Helena on the Mayacamas range that divides Napa and Sonoma. Under the direction of winemaker David Tate, the estate farms each block vine by vine on slopes reaching up to 35 degrees, supplementing the harvest with fruit from neighboring York Creek Vineyard to build depth and structure.
Terroir and Vintage
The 2021 vintage draws from vines planted in volcanic and sedimentary soils characteristic of Spring Mountain, at elevations surpassing one thousand feet where cooling Pacific breezes temper the summer heat. This cool, high-altitude environment contributes vibrant acidity and refined tannins that frame the wine’s rich fruit profile.
Winemaking
This Cabernet Sauvignon is a thoughtful blend built primarily around Cabernet Sauvignon, with small additions of Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. After harvest, each block ferments separately with regular punch-downs to build color and structure, followed by aging in French oak to integrate complexity and lend subtle spice and refinement.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine presents a deep purple hue. Aromas unfold with cassis, dark plum, and black licorice, drawing in notes of coffee grounds and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is full and silky, offering mocha and dark cherry flavors that ride on chalky, mountain-bred tannins, all balanced by bright acidity that keeps the wine poised and ready to evolve with time.
