The 2021 Rivers Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga is a Calistoga-named expression that embodies Rivers-Marie’s restrained, site-driven philosophy. This appellation blend is built largely from Larkmead Vineyard fruit, with additional input from a few neighboring northern Napa sites, all drawn from a terroir defined by loamy volcanic soils that help shape its lifted, savory character. Vineyard & winemaking approach Brown favors early picking to preserve brightness and freshness, then guides the wine with native yeasts to honor the place over intensity. Aged in French oak, the wine develops a poised structure that stays true to its Calistoga roots while remaining approachable in its youth. Tasting notes - Nose: Savory black and red fruits lift with hints of dried herbs, graphite, walnut shell, and the crushed-stone nuance typical of Larkmead. - Palate: Medium to full-bodied with ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, persistent finish that echoes the unique limestone-ash complexity of the source materials. Food pairings - Roast duck - Firm alpine cheeses Why this wine stands out This Rivers-Marie bottling foregrounds place over power, offering a refined Calistoga Cabernet that remains distinctly food-friendly from first pour to finish. The blend’s provenance from Larkmead’s loamy volcanic soils and Brown’s early-picked, native-yeast approach combine to deliver a Cabernet Sauvignon that is expressive, nuanced, and versatile at table.

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga emerges from Larkmead, one

of the most historic estates in Napa Valley. The ripe dark fruit profile

intermingled with hints of spice, dried herbs, earthiness, saddle leather

and licorice is classic Calistoga all the way—as interpreted by Thomas

Rivers Brown, which means the fruit is dialed up. Readers will find an

exuberant, flamboyant Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers the goods.

"Mostly from Larkmead (there's a few other vineyards in here for the first time), the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga has a great nose of savory red and black fruits as well as classic Larkmead loamy soil, walnut shell, and crushed stone notes. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, it has ripe tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. I'd give it a few years, but this should see its 20th birthday in fine form."
